Pakistan Under Water

Much of Pakistan has been left underwater following horrific flooding. The flooding has resulted in:

  • Over 1,500 dead.

  • Over 12,000 injured.

  • Millions made homeless or displaced.

The situation is particularly acute in Sindh province in the south of Pakistan. ACN has been in contact with Catholic bishops in Pakistan. Bishop Samson Shukardin of the Diocese of Hyderabad has told ACN that the flooding has heavily impacted all 19 parishes in his diocese. Many have no food, no water, and no shelter. The people have sought refuge in church buildings, many of which are also flooded. Archbishop Benny Travas of Karachi has reported that religious minorities, including Christians, have been turned away from aid distribution centres. This means that the aid provided by the Catholic Church is of even greater importance.

In response to the appeal for aid from the Pakistani bishops and the request from Pope Francis to assist Pakistan, ACN has committed to providing €230,000 in aid to help the Catholic Church in Pakistan respond to this crisis.
