Earthquake Leaves Devastation in Haiti
On Saturday 14 August, Les Cayes, Haiti, was hit by a devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake. According to information released on Monday 16 August by the Haitian civil protection agency:
A total of 1300 people lost their lives in the earthquake.
At least 5700 people were injured.
There is widespread infrastructure damage.
The situation for the people of Haiti was already extremely difficult. The Caribbean nation is plagued with political instability and a high crime rate, and has previously been devastated by natural disasters. In response to this disaster Aid to the Church in Need has announced a €500,000 emergency aid package for Haiti.

The Earthquake’s Impact on the Church
ACN received information from the Diocese of Jeremie in Haiti about the damage caused by the earthquake. The diocese had 58 churches before the earthquake.
26 churches have suffered substantial damage.
11 churches have been destroyed and need to be rebuilt.
The Cathedral of St. Louis was badly damaged.
